Kobane, Syria – The Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) reported progress on various fighting fronts against extremists of the Islamic State (IS/ISIL) in Kobane, northern Syria, especially in the eastern districts of the city.
Speaking to ARA News in Kobane, the leading fighter of the YPG, Chekdar Kobani, said that the fighter jets of the international coalition launched several air raids against “the terrorists’ locations (in reference to IS militants) in eastern Kobane, which enabled our forces to storm these areas and regain control there” (in reference to the Islamic State), which led to the destruction of a number of IS-led military vehicles”.
“Our YPG fighters took advantage of these air raids, by carrying out surprise attacks on several locations in the district of Kanya Araban in eastern Kobane, regaining control of these sites,” Chekdar said.
The leading member of the YPG added that their fighters were able to kill dozens of IS militants after planning an ambush in the southern suburb of Kobane.
The U.S.-led anti-IS international coalition launched at least 16 airstrikes on Thursday against strongholds of IS insurgents in Kobane, activists told ARA News.
