Dozens killed as pro-Assad forces intensify offensive against rebel-held areas

Damascus, Syria – Military forces loyal to the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad committed what activists described as “a massacre” in the Eastern Ghouta of Damascus, where at least 15 civilians were killed on Thursday.

Activists in Damascus told ARA News that on Thursday the pro-regime warplanes launched four air raids on the center and the outskirts of the town of Jisren in Eastern Ghouta, resulting in the death of at least 15 civilians and the injury of dozens others, mostly women and children.

The raids resulted in the destruction of a large number of residential buildings and infrastructure, in addition the raids caused fires in homes as well as farms surrounding the town.

Medical sources also reported in the district of Jobar, eastern Damascus, that the Syrian regime’s army targeted the neighborhood with toxic gas, causing dozens of cases of suffocation in the ranks of the opposition fighters in the district, who used the neighborhood as a stronghold for their operations against the Assad regime in Damascus.

Meanwhile, pro-Assad military forces reportedly bombed the outskirts of Zamalka in the Eastern Ghouta and the Southern Highway with destructive ground-to-ground weapons.

In Aleppo, on the other hand, clashes broke out between rebels of the Islamic Front and the Syrian Movement of Hazm who opposed the pro-regime military forces backed by militias of the National Defense Army, in the town of Handarat in the northern countryside of Aleppo, killing two members of the regime forces on Thursday.

Local sources in the countryside of Aleppo, northern Syria, reported that the Syrian air force targeted the towns of Anadan and Haritan with smart rockets which resulted in large damage to property. No casualties were reported in the attack.

The city of Maaret al-Numan in Idlib, northwestern Syria, witnessed attacks with explosive barrels by pro-Assad helicopters, especially in the southern parts of the city, causing dozens of casualties, local sources told ARA News.

Notably, on Thursday Syrian human rights networks documented the death of 35 people in various Syrian provinces, including 15 people in the town of Jisren, 7 children, one woman and two young men under torture, as well as four fighters from the armed opposition.
