Girke Lege, Syria – On Tuesday, two Syrian Kurdish military officers (who recently joined Pehsmerga forces in Iraq) lost their lives during clashes against extremists of the Islamic State (IS/ISIL) in the Bashinqa area of Nineveh province, northern Iraq.

Speaking to ARA News, a Syrian member of the Kurdish Peshmerga said that one of the officers who was killed during clashes against IS was Sher Yusif Ahmed, known as Hoger, while the other Syrian officer was Jomard Misho.

“These Kurdish officers dissented from the Syrian army and headed to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to volunteer in the ranks of the Peshmerga,” the source said, under the condition of anonymity.

“Many Syrian Kurds have recently joined the Peshmerga army of Iraqi Kurdistan, especially with the outbreak of military operations against extremists of the Islamic State,” the same source added. “Dozens of them have been killed by IS militants while defending the Kurdish Region.”

According to Syrian Kurdish activists, Iraqi Peshmerga didn’t announce the number of Syrian Kurds fighting in the anti-IS battles in northern Iraq.

“The role of the Syrian Kurds in the anti-IS war in Iraq is unfortunately neglected,” said Guhdar Findi, a Syrian opposition activist based in Erbil, capital of Iraqi Kurdistan.

“I know dozens of Syrian Kurds who voluntarily joined the ranks of the Peshmerga to fight against IS, but the local media (of Iraqi Kurdistan) never mentions their role in this war,” Findi told ARA News.

The Kurdish forces of the Peshmerga have been launching military operations against militant fighters of the Islamic State in northern Iraq for weeks, supported by U.S. and Iraqi air forces.
