Kobane, Syria – Clashes renewed between the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) on the one hand, and militants of al-Qaeda offshoot group of the Islamic State (IS) on the other hand, in eastern, western and southern countryside of the predominant Kurdish city of Kobane in Aleppo province, northern Syria, after a week of relative calmness in the area.
The area saw over the last two days fierce clashes and bombardment of villages in Kobane countryside.
Activists based in the city of Kobane told ARA News that the YPG forces targeted with mortar fire on Monday one of the IS military bases in the village of Bir Tatmah in the eastern countryside of the city.
Six IS militants were reported dead during the clashes.
Meanwhile, the YPG imposed a siege on the village and sporadic clashes in its surroundings took place on Monday evening.
The YPG tries to regain control over several Kurdish-populated villages east of Kobane after IS militants imposed their control there nearly two months ago.
Militants of the Islamic State (IS) pounded on Sunday the villages of Barkh Botan and Ashma (30 km south of Kobane city) with mortar fire from their bases in Jadeh village near the bridge Qara Qozak.
The bombardment of the village left behind large damage in private property, without recording any casualties among civilians.
On the other hand, Kurdish fighters of the YPG responded by pounding IS gatherings with artillery (Dushka type) at the mosque checkpoint near Jadeh village junction and Qara Qozak bridge, YPG-linked sources told ARA News.
Activists also reported that violent clashes broke out on Sunday night between the YPG forces and militants of IS in the villages of Kattash and Jib al-Faraj (35 km western Kobane), and on the outskirts of the IS-held village of al-Ziyara.
Five militants of the Islamic State group were killed during the clashes, while nine others were injured and were reportedly transferred to hospitals in the nearby al-Shuyoukh area. On the other hand, one YPG fighter was reported dead and three others wounded in the recent clashes, local activists from the vicinity of the clashes told ARA News.
In the meantime, IS militants reportedly arrested dozens of supporters of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in the western countryside of Kobane. The detainees were transferred to the IS-held city of Manbij in Aleppo countryside.
