Qamishli, Syria – The Syrian regime military forces shelled on Saturday with heavy artillery and rockets the southern countryside of the city of Qamishli, northeast Syria.

Speaking to ARA News, Jiwan Suleiman, civil rights activist, said that artillery shelling and missile launched by the pro-regime forces (stationed in Harat al-Tay regiment) targeted ISIL-held  towns of Tel Birak and Tel Hamis and the surrounding villages, south of Qamishli.

This coincided with  clashes between the Kurdish forces of the Popuar Protection units (YPG) and al-Qaeda splinter group of the Islamic State (previously known as ‘ISIL’) in Jazaa town near Tirbespi (Qahtaniyah), east of Qamishli.

“The YPG-ISIL clashes erupted in Jazaa village near the Iraqi border, leaving dead and wounded among the fighters of the Islamic State (ISIL), without reports of casualties in the ranks of the YPG forces,” Suleiman reported. “Reinforcements were sent to the YPG-held village of Jazaa on Saturday evening.”

In a liked context, media sources loyal to the Syrian regime reported that the attack on Jazaa town was launched by ISIL militants “who crossed the border from Iraq to Syria”. However, local sources said that the majority of ISIL forces came from Shaddadi and Tel Hamis areas nea Qamishli and headed to Jazaa in an attempt to take over the town and weaken YPG’s fist in the area.

Noteworthy, the Kurdish Peshmerga forces (which are stationed at the Iraqi-Syrian border) joined these clashes from Hamedan village near the border line with Syria, opening fire on ISIL vehicles, after the entry of an ISIL convoy formed of 40 cars to the countryside of Syria’s Tel Kocher (Yarubiya) last week.
